What is Lights?

Lights is a Christian youth group with about 70 young people in years 7-12 from all over Sydney. We meet up on Fridays at 7-9pm in the Memorial Hall at St Thomas' (Cnr Church & McLaren Sts, North Sydney).

We also have Daylights on a Sunday morning @10am for years 7-9, and everyone is welcome to Church @5pm.

A typical Friday night includes:

Games
a lot of fun!
Bible Talk
given by one of our leaders
Discussion Group
with new friends in your age/gender
Supper
with plenty of time to hang out and eat!

John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

What we believe.

Here at Lights, Jesus is the person we talk about most. So who is he and why is he important?

Jesus is the Son of God who became human, to live a perfect life and die for us, so we could have eternal life. It sounds crazy right – who the heck would love us that much, and why was dying necessary?

Here’s 5 simple, key points about what we believe at Lights:

CREATION
God created the whole world including us – and he made it perfectly. He loved us so much he made us in his OWN IMAGE and had a personal relationship with us.
SIN
God gave us a choice – to follow his way or go our own way. We turned our backs on God and decided to live as we wanted to – this is called sin.
DEATH
The Bible tells us that the punishment for sin is death. So God can justly let us all die and go to hell.
JESUS
But God didn’t – because he loves us. He loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus to die INSTEAD of us, taking our punishment which we deserved- and then he rose again after conquering death.
ETERNITY
So now there’s a choice – Jesus took away the sin that stopped us having a relationship with God. If we believe in Jesus, then God will give us ETERNAL LIFE in an eternal relationship with him!

Lights is all about the radical love of God making radical followers of Jesus Christ

Why we exist?

We know the word ‘radical’ can carry some negative baggage, but it doesn’t need to. To be clear, we’re not about violence or terrorism or anything like that.

The word ‘radical’ comes from the Latin word for ‘root’, like roots in a tree. We’re trying to express the fact that God’s love goes all the way to his core. It’s not just a ‘sometimes thing’. It permeates all he does and is most profoundly seen in what he has done in Jesus Christ...

You know you're a radical follower of Jesus when you:

Know the Gospel
knowing the message about the radical love of God is called the gospel
Grow in the Gospel
growing in our joy in prayer and God's word
Show the Gospel
doing good works for God's glory
Go with the Gospel
sharing the message with friends, family, all nations!

Our Church.

Lights is part of St Thomas’ Anglican Church, North Sydney. Our church exists to display the glory of God in the world and the heavens (Ephesians 3:10) and our mission is to evangelise the North Sydney area by sharing the gospel with our community, to enfold newcomers into our church family by loving and caring for them, and to equip and train our members to know, serve and proclaim Christ.

Our Senior Pastor is Simon Manchester, and we have three Sunday services – at 8am, 10am and 5pm. Anyone is welcome to come along.

Visit the church website for more information.

Meet our leaders.

One of the best things about Lights is our leaders. They’re a group of godly, gifted, loving, sacrificial and servant-hearted volunteers. We’ve asked them to lead because they love God and because they’re great role-models for teenagers as they go through the high school years. They’ve completed intensive safe ministry training and Working With Children Checks.
