Why should I give?

One of the great privileges as members of God’s family is that we get to give generously to the work of his church. It’s not that God needs our money (it’s all his to begin with!), it’s that he rejoices to involve us in the work he is doing in the world as we use our time, gifts and money to serve him.

We think giving generously is one of the best, most joyful things you can do with money. And we reckon that it’s best to learn generosity now, not put it off to later (when you think you will have more to give). We think that if you’re generous with a little now, you’ll be generous with a lot later and that if you’re stingy with a little now you’ll probably be stingy with a lot later.

Generous giving is great because it’s God’s plan for us (2 Cor. 9:7). He makes it clear that we should support the work of gospel ministers among us (1 Cor. 9:14). Plus 20% of St Thomas’ offertory goes to the wonderful work of the missionaries we support around the world. But also in a culture that wants more, more, more for me, me, me (even though we have vastly more than any culture in the history of civilisation), we think it’s great to be able to sit back and say ‘Wow, you know what? I’ve got plenty! In fact, I’ve been blessed so richly that I can easily give my money generously.’ What a beautiful, outward-focused difference to the sad, inward-focused vision of so many around us.

An informative short video has been put together to give an overview of how giving works at St Thomas’:

How much should I give?

In Leviticus the Israelites were encouraged to tithe by giving 10% of their income or produce to the Lord. We are now under the new covenant in Jesus Christ whereby we have been gloriously justified by God’s grace and mercy, and so our giving should be in response to our Father’s grace. Paul reminds us in 2 Cor 9:7 that each of us should give what we have decided in our heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

A helpful approach is to start with a tithe with the overall principle that, where possible, grace should go beyond the law.
